Progressive Web App (PWA)

A Progressive Web App (PWA) is a recent variety of web application that behaves more similar to a native mobile application, yet is served by a standard web browser. Unlike common mobile applications, which have to be obtained in the App Store or Google Play, PWAs are accessible merely by visiting a site in a browser and can even be pinned to the device of a user with a single tap.

The strength in PWAs lies in the fact that they are quick, dependable, and interactive. They load fast even over slow networks, can send push notifications (as mobile apps can), and even work offline, with a background technology known as service workers.

Example: The next time you open a travel booking site on your phone and it prompts you with the message, “Add to Home Screen?” that is a PWA at work. After it has been added, it acts and feels like a native mobile app almost.
